Founded in 2022 by Yuko Fujiyama, Contemporary East highlights the beauty and depth of Eastern expressions in improvisational music. We seek to cultivate meaningful opportunities for artists of diverse backgrounds and disciplines to collaborate and share their work through public programs, while building awareness of aesthetics in Asian-inspired music.

New York City is arguably the center of improvisational music fed by so many musicians from around the world. It’s also fair to say that it’s home to the largest concentration of Asian contemporary improvisers in the world. It is our desire that Contemporary East will build an awareness of the aesthetics of the eastern expression in NYC and start a movement which will be followed by generations.

There is something very important about ensemble improvisation that you can get only by playing together. We started jam session for a contemporary improvisation every month on the first Tuesday night at Greenwich House Music School in Manhattan. Door is open to anybody who is interested. It’s to share the precious moments in the free improvisational sessions and to inspire each other’s creativity.
